Knowledge is power. iNaturalist is a social network of naturalists, citizen scientists, and biologists built on the concept of mapping and sharing observations of biodiversity across the globe. A joint initiative of the California Academy of Sciences and the National Geographic Society, this robust tool connects you to the natural world and contributes to biodiversity databases with real applications.
Join ecologist Steven Lamonde, of Moosewood Ecological LLC, for an introduction to iNaturalist, how to best use this powerful ID tool, and how you can help contribute crucial data to important community science projects through this phone-friendly, easy-to-use program. Steven will cover required basics and FAQ's to successfully get you started as well as investigate questions from seasoned users.
Our program will start with a presentation and discussion with Steven at the museum. Then, we'll hit the trails of the museum property and the Grafton Village Park to give iNaturalist a try, make observations, and tap into Steven's incredible wealth of ecological knowledge as we discover all kinds of natural wonders. Whether you're interested in iNaturalist or not, all are welcome.
For those interested in the iNaturalist component of the program, we encourage you to bring a phone or tablet with the iNaturalist app pre-downloaded and installed with a free account set up ahead of time.
Important Note: The guided walk may have uneven/unlevel terrain, variable ground conditions, and moderate hiking. Unless there is hazardous weather, this program will occur rain or shine. The make-up date is at the same time on the following day, Sunday 04/30. Please make sure that you're available for the make up date as we cannot issue refunds for an inability to attend the rescheduled program.
Presenter Bio: Steven Lamonde grew up along Massachusetts’ South Shore where he developed a deep curiosity for all things wild. After receiving a B.S. from Johnson State College in Environmental Science, Steven moved to the Monadnock Region to pursue an M.S. in Conservation Biology at Antioch University New England. Here, his passion for birds and community science intensified, leading to active participation in regional and national bird conservation projects. In addition to working for Moosewood Ecological, Steven teaches part-time as an affiliate professor at Antioch University. Never without binoculars or a camera close at hand, Steven enjoys taking any opportunity to document biodiversity.
