Hawk Watch With The Vermont Center For Ecostudies

Saturday, October 8th, 2022; Make up Sunday, October 9th, 2022

9:00AM - 11:00AM (Make up date same time)

443 Putney Mountain Rd, Putney, VT 05346

Sliding scale $25, $30, $35

Since 1974, dedicated volunteers have kept watch every fall for birds of prey migrating over Putney Mountain. This ridge along the Connecticut River Valley acts as a natural highway for hawk movement, and any fall day visitors can see Broad-winged Hawks, Peregrine Falcons, Osprey, and perhaps even a Golden Eagle or Northern Goshawk heading southbound. Join VCE staff biologists Nathaniel Sharp and Kevin Tolan for an introduction to hawkwatching, and learn about the natural history of raptor migration, as well as how to locate and identify migrating raptors soaring high overhead.

If there’s significant poor or hazardous weather, the program will happen on the following day, Sunday 10/09/22, at the same time. We will contact you as soon as possible if this change is necessary. Please be sure that you are available for both the primary program date/time and make up program date/time. Please plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the program to give yourself time to park, check in, and take care of any needs before we begin.

Hiking will include moderate inclines, uneven terrain, and there may be muddy/wet conditions. There are no facilities at this site. Please be prepared with whatever you need to be safe and comfortable for the duration of the program.

  • Sturdy, comfortable, and waterproof hiking shoes, boots, or other appropriate footwear

  • Trekking/walking pole(s)

  • Sufficient water

  • A snack

  • Insect repellent

  • Binoculars (Please let us know on your registration form if you need a pair of binoculars)
