We’ve all heard of a lady bug, but what’s a lady beetle? We’ll be answering that question and more as we search for native species of beetles in the Chapman Meadow in Grafton, VT. In collaboration with The Vermont Center for Ecostudies , we’ll contribute our data to the Lady Beetle Atlas -- and we need your help!
Vermont historically had 35 species of native lady beetles, not including the ubiquitous red, spotted Asian Lady Beetle that is invasive to Vermont. Of the 35 native species, 12 are still absent from recent data, and we’re relying on Citizen Scientists to help with survey efforts.
For this survey, be prepared to venture into our field and help collect insects with sweep nets (provided). Long pants and sturdy shoes are recommended, as well as any other gear for the weather that day. We will also provide information for how you can do your own Lady Beetle survey at home through iNaturalist.
